The Standard: NC alumnus Nick Printup wins national Share Your Roots video competition

The St. Catharines Standard featured NC alumnus Nick Printup who won the Share Your Roots contest by ORIGIN, an Indigenous-owned tech-based enterprise which uses virtual reality technology to build a culture and career-based library for Indigenous youth across Canada.

Printup holds several credentials from NC: Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film (Advanced Diploma) 2015; International Business Management (Graduate Certificate) 2016; Welding Pre-Apprenticeship (Statement of Completion) 2017. He also recently graduated from Brock University’s media and communications study program.

Printup is among three winners who have been selected to direct and create short virtual reality videos based on Indigenous culture. Printup chose to focus on something close to his cultural background: lacrosse.

Printup explains that the Haudenosaunee and Iroquois people created lacrosse, which they believe was passed down from their Creator, and it was both a past time and a way to settle squabbles and wars. Printup explains that Haudenosaunee males are given lacrosse sticks at birth, a sacred keepsake.

Printup hopes his project will be a bridge to educate and spread cultural awareness among Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
