On January 30, the three Niagara dailies (St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review and Welland Tribune) reported on the 2023 Ontario Beer Awards where NC’s Teaching Brewery took home gold and silver. The gold meal was for Beer 101 Bock in the amber malty European lager category, while the silver medal was for Beer 101 Strong Ale in the strong British Ale category.

General Manager of Niagara College’s Learning Enterprises, Steve Gill is quoted from NC’s release: “Our trailblazing teaching brewery continues to raise the bar for the industry. “The biggest winners are our students, thanks to the quality of applied education at Niagara College.”

The article notes that there were several Niagara College graduates who received medals at other breweries. Aaron Spinney, who was in Niagara’s first class of Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management Program graduates in 2012 and now operates Merit Brewing Co. in downtown Hamilton, won gold in the specialty beer category for Happy Place, a wine-beer hybrid.
