CBC News: Alum, educator and mental health worker Jessica Compton draws on troubled childhood to help others

CBC News profiled Jessica Compton, NC alum (Correctional Worker diploma, 2001), educator and mental health worker. Compton who runs her own program Tree of Stars promoting mental health through storytelling, journal writing, live music and meditation. The article tells the story of Compton’s extraordinarily difficult youth and her story as a survivor of sexual assault. Today, Compton works as an educational assistant with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

Born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, her story includes living on the streets, in foster homes, and time spent in prison. Following three months in rehab, Compton completed high school at age 21 and graduated from Niagara College’s Correctional Worker diploma program. Now Compton has nine years on the school board under her belt, as well as several years dedicated to youth programming at the YMCA and her Hamilton school.
